PRICE: Punchy but doesn’t blow the budget
The Met. It’s a name synonymous with chic urban style. A familiar crash pad in Bangkok, Thailand, to the uber sophisticated globetrotters that walk through its doors. Unswerving in its sleek application of understated quality, it is sensual playground for discerning travellers. The Met Bangkok squarely lives up to luxury hotel group COMO’s reputation for excellence.
The interiors are a delicate balance of contrasts. Swathed in white, with dark makha wood floors and a conspicuous absence of predictable vernacular clutter is the trademark. This is contemporary Asian living at its most perfect. Flooded with natural light, the spaces leave you feeling invigorated and energised. And that’s before you discover the Como Shambhala bathroom products with which your body will be pampered.
The facilities can be taken for granted. Its pretty obvious that Nespresso machines, Bose Wave sound systems and rain showers will come as standard. However, for us, its those little things that are the most exciting. The yoga mat, the fine goose down duvets and the exceptional room service that have kept the Metropolitan on our hot list year after year.
For those that require further rejuvenation of body and soul, the COMO Shambhala spa offers the ultimate urban escape. Its reputation stretches far and wide and the treatments are legendary. Unlike most other Thai spas, and in line with the Metropolitan concept, all of the usual spa paraphernalia is missing. You’ll find clean lines and stripped back spaces that help heal and cleanse the mind of the confusion from the outside world.
Any discussion of the Metropolitan would be incomplete without mentioning the chow. It’s no surprise that the food is out of this world, given that Nahm, the main restaurant, has been consistently voted in the World’s top 50 since 2012. Most recently in 2017 it was fifth on the annual San Pellegrino list.
Bold Thai ingredients are thrown together to create magnificent but simple dishes with immense flavours. If you require something altogether different, Glow is the healthy option, delivering knockout juices, fresh salads and balanced light meals that fit with the COMO Shambhala philosophy. Given this combination of food options, you can only imagine what the late-night room service is like after an indulgent evening in world renowned The Met Bar.
Nahm is superb and should be a fixture on your dining list. Perhaps lunch overlooking the pool so that you can get out and about in the evenings. We recommend the stir-fried cured pork with tomato and fiddlehead ferns.
