Planes, Trains & Automobiles
‘Arriving there is what you are destined for. But do not hurry the journey at all,’ wrote the Greek poet C P Cavafy in his great poem Ithaca, a celebration of journeying in all its forms. And who wants to hurry at all when the mode of transport itself is utterly delicious?
Whether on tracks, tarmac or in the air, Yonder has it covered.
In the air, imagine landing by seaplane in one of the lakes or sheltered bays of Sri Lanka. It’s a great way to travel and minimises the time you spend in a car. Or arrive by helicopter over the pristine tropical beaches and turquoise seas to your luxury hotel in Langkawi in Malaysia. Now that’s how to do your transfer from the airport!
By train we have some amazing options. Wend your way through the mist-wreathed tea fields of Sri Lanka’s Hill Country, marvelling at the verdant plantations and the tea-pluckers dressed in colourful saris. Take the Maharajas Express, one of the world’s great luxury train rides and a marvellous way to see the jewels of India in utter comfort. The railways form the backbone of the commuter system in India. And you can experience it first-hand travelling from one of Delhi’s busiest stations. In Myanmar, take a train across the spectacular Gokteik Viaduct, the largest railway trestle in the world at the time of its completion.
On the road, the Maharajas of Rajasthan have always been avid car collectors and when you stay at their magnificent palaces in northern India it’s possible to have private rides in magnificent vintage cars. Alternatively, arrive in style to your hotel in KL or Singapore in a chauffeur-driven Bentley or Rolls Royce.
